Weekend Recap, March 30-31, 2024

The National Economic Council (NEC) held another meeting of the Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force to address the effects of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and the partial closure of the Port of Baltimore. The Department of Transportation, led by Secretary Buttigieg, shared feedback from a stakeholder session on dealing with the disruptions. The Department of Agriculture also held discussions on the impact on the food and agricultural sectors. Efforts to divert cargo to other ports and mitigate consumer impact were noted, alongside the Federal Maritime Commission's work on ensuring fair practices regarding demurrage and detention fees. The NEC reiterated the administration's commitment to quickly reopening the Port of Baltimore and supporting affected communities, with plans to keep coordinating federal support through the task force.

The White House released visitor log records generated in December 2023. This set includes 122,138 records, bringing the total number of records posted to 1,207,458. These records were posted pursuant to the White House’s policy to voluntarily disclose visitor log records. This release is consistent with the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to becoming the first administration to post visitor log records from its first full year in office.

The Biden-Harris Administration conducted a roundtable aimed at addressing the increase in hate-fueled violence in the U.S., recognizing it as a threat to democracy. The discussion, following the U.S.'s participation in the third Summit for Democracy, focused on the Administration's efforts to combat this issue and explored strategies to promote unity and prevent the normalization of such violence. This initiative aligns with actions taken since President Biden's inauguration, including signing the bipartisan COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act and introducing strategies against domestic terrorism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and related biases. The roundtable featured contributions from key governmental figures and leaders from various sectors committed to eradicating hate-fueled violence, underscoring the Administration's pledge to provide no safe harbor for hate in America.
